Kreuzberg
36 soon without SO36?

After 30 years the institution now desperately needs a noise-protection wall. SO36, the group organising cultural- and music events, situated in Berlin-Kreuzberg Oranienstraße, is celebrating its 30 anniversary. But at the same time, its very existence is being threatened. The cause of the trouble is an ongoing conflict with a neighbouring party concerning disturbance. As it seems, the only way to ensure the survival of the SO36 is the erection of a wall protecting against noise. How did this situation come about? During the last months there have been complains by a neighbour, who feels disturbed with regard to the noise level, as it is perceptible via his kitchen window. We
have done everything within our power to reach an appropriate agreement
concerning this, especially, because we highly value a harmonious atmosphere
with our neighbours. After all, Kreuzberg's society with its cultural
variety demands such mutual respect. To reach a mutual agreement, there is no way around extensive constructions, which need to include noise-controlling technology. The most important of these measures is the erection of a noise-protection wall next to our building. However, the SO36 is not capable to bear the costs (about 80.000€) for such a wall. This means, that - unless support can be generated - the SO36 will need to close down. 30 years SO36 in Kreuzberg! Since
30 years the SO36 reflects those things, for which Kreuzberg is either
loved or hated. We, the team of SO36, activly involve ourselves since
1979, to provide affordable culture for Kreuzberg. That means 30 years
of group-work related to the leftist, gay and lesbian underground-culture
in cooperation with countless other social and political oriented projects.
The SO36 is one of the few companies in the We
don't represent a new alternative to such projects as Media-Spree -
we have been here for a long time and it is through us and with us,
that Kreuzberg became that exceptional centre of culture, which is so
well known - even outside of Berlin. What is it, that we want? For 30 years there have been no problems to run the SO36 the way we did it. Moreover, if the suburban train passes through town at night and continues, despite of all modernization, to produce more noise than we do - we as well have a right to survive. In the last years, we have attended to the need of time and have indeed succeeded to reduce noise-levels thanks to a number of renewal measures. There
is, however, a limit, which we can't go beyond. We neither can nor want
to arrange concerts and parties on a moderate volume. If
it is possible for the responsible offices to grant millions to projects
like O2-World to support their infrastructural connectedness and issue
special noise-regulations, why then should it be impossible to finance
a noise-protection wall for the SO36? We therefore demand from the municipal authorities and district administration: · provide us with money for the erection of a noise-protection wall, so that we can continue our work. · This is not the time to create obstacles for the SO36, but rather a situation to be supportive, so that things can go on. We neither need lip service nor restrictive regulations, but rather real support! The Decision to be made is one for or against our culture. We are noisy and we want to remain that way - not against but together with our neighbours. We won't give up without fighting. For

What can you do? We
