Kreuzberg 36 soon without SO36?
deutsch

what can you do?

After 30 years the institution now desperately needs a noise-protection wall.

SO36, the group organising cultural- and music events, situated in Berlin-Kreuzberg Oranienstraße, is celebrating its 30 anniversary. But at the same time, its very existence is being threatened. The cause of the trouble is an ongoing conflict with a neighbouring party concerning disturbance. As it seems, the only way to ensure the survival of the SO36 is the erection of a wall protecting against noise.

How did this situation come about? During the last months there have been complains by a neighbour, who feels disturbed with regard to the noise level, as it is perceptible via his kitchen window.

We have done everything within our power to reach an appropriate agreement concerning this, especially, because we highly value a harmonious atmosphere with our neighbours. After all, Kreuzberg's society with its cultural variety demands such mutual respect.
Unfortunately, this time it has not been possible, to solve the conflict through unbureaucratic means. The latest development is an order by the municipal public order office, dated 27. February, which specifies conditions to reduce noise. However, for the time being we can't possibly comply fully with the requirements of this order. This is so, because, what is being called "noise-reduction in residential areas ", means actually, that we would have to conduct concerts on a moderate volume.

To reach a mutual agreement, there is no way around extensive constructions, which need to include noise-controlling technology. The most important of these measures is the erection of a noise-protection wall next to our building. However, the SO36 is not capable to bear the costs (about 80.000€) for such a wall. This means, that - unless support can be generated - the SO36 will need to close down.

30 years SO36 in Kreuzberg!

Since 30 years the SO36 reflects those things, for which Kreuzberg is either loved or hated. We, the team of SO36, activly involve ourselves since 1979, to provide affordable culture for Kreuzberg. That means 30 years of group-work related to the leftist, gay and lesbian underground-culture in cooperation with countless other social and political oriented projects. The SO36 is one of the few companies in the
neighbourhood which takes on trainees ( at present 6 trainees). Altogether more than 50 people living in the neighbourhood support themselves through involvement
with the SO36. Who are we? We are from different age groups, gay, lesbian, or otherwise, we are punks, students, employed or freelancing, over- or under qualified. Many of us have a background of immigration; look back to roots in
Anatolia or Maghreb, come from Breisgau or Cottbus.
We not only talk about cultural diversity - we embody that diversity in our day to day life with each other!

We don't represent a new alternative to such projects as Media-Spree - we have been here for a long time and it is through us and with us, that Kreuzberg became that exceptional centre of culture, which is so well known - even outside of Berlin.
As we have always done, we don't just serve commerce and present-day trends. At our place nearly all sorts of sub cultural trends are being supported. Such as punk, hardcore, hip-hop from and with youngsters from the neighbourhood, or gay-lesbian dancing accompanied by German hit songs.
One highlight is our monthly "Bingo" Game, in favour of social or political projects, the prices for which are being contributed by shops and bars out of the neighbourhood.

What is it, that we want?

For 30 years there have been no problems to run the SO36 the way we did it. Moreover, if the suburban train passes through town at night and continues, despite of all modernization, to produce more noise than we do - we as well have a right to survive. In the last years, we have attended to the need of time and have indeed succeeded to reduce noise-levels thanks to a number of renewal measures.

There is, however, a limit, which we can't go beyond. We neither can nor want to arrange concerts and parties on a moderate volume.
Therefore it is up to the municipal authorities and district administration to find a solution! In reality, it is not the frequently mentioned practical necessities which threaten the survival of the SO36, but rather political decisions being made.

If it is possible for the responsible offices to grant millions to projects like O2-World to support their infrastructural connectedness and issue special noise-regulations, why then should it be impossible to finance a noise-protection wall for the SO36?
After all - we are a cultural, social and economical enrichment for the city.

We therefore demand from the municipal authorities and district administration:

· provide us with money for the erection of a noise-protection wall, so that we can continue our work.

· This is not the time to create obstacles for the SO36, but rather a situation to be supportive, so that things can go on.

We neither need lip service nor restrictive regulations, but rather real support! The Decision to be made is one for or against our culture. We are noisy and we want to remain that way - not against but together with our neighbours. We won't give up without fighting.

What can you do?

We demand a political solution, so the politicians need to hear about this problem and how many are affected by it.
You can let them know about it by sending them an e-mail. It's a "Super election year" over here.

1. please write a mail to those adresses, mentioned below.

Die Linke: info@dielinke-fk.de
Die SPD: info@spd-fraktion-friedrichshain-kreuzberg.de

But maybe you know other people who should know about this? Maybe your representative in the European Parliament?

In general we are glad for all proposals and ideas you might have!

Die Grünen, Christian Ströbele and Franz Schulz do already care about a solution.
We are glad about that and took their e-mail adresses from this site...

Here is a blueprint how this e-mail might look like:

Dear Sir or Madam,

As it came to my attention, there is an immediate danger, that – because of an Order
by Kreuzberg's district administration - the SO36 might need to close down. In fact, as
it is evident from this order, only the erection of a noise-protection wall will be
deemed sufficient to secure the survival of the SO36.

Undoubtedly it is the duty of Kreuzberg's district administration to support a peaceful
coexistence of the various groups of interest and elements the make up Kreuzberg and
its unique cultural flair. This responsibility includes the negotiation of possible
conflicts between the justified interests of the residents on the one hand, and local
institutions, such as facilities for night-life, on the other hand.

I therefore request you, the political responsible, to make available the financial
means for this noise-protection wall, so that the SO36, an important sociocultural
place for Kreuzberg, may be preserved.

Kind regards,
